30대 초반까지는 나름 꾸준히 글을 썼다. 마지막으로 쓴 글이 법인 설립하고 미국뉴욕에 잠시 가족들 정착을 도와주러갔던 2018년 8월에 쓴 글이다.

“다시 출발선에서.”

그 출발선에서 몇 발을 내딛는데에 6년 반이라는 시간이 걸렸다. 2018년의 나는 정말 오만했고, 가족들에게 딱 4년이면 결론이 날거라고 당부했다. 중간에 covid-19이라는 큰 사건이 있기는 했지만, 사실 결과적으로는 크게 다르지 않았을거라고 생각한다. 창업가와 대표로서의 내 자신의 능력은 한없이 부족했기에, 수많은 시행착오를 겪고서야 이제 겨우 초보 창업자와 대표 딱지를 떼고 있다.

블로그를 다시 시작해볼까 하는 생각을 몇 번 했었다. 하지만, 작년까지는 결승점까지 완주할 수 있을지에 대한 확신이 없었다. 출발점에서 몇 발짝 내딛었다가 다시 원점으로 돌아가는 무한 루프에 빠진 느낌으로 창업 이후 만 4년이 훌쩍 흘러갔다. 실수에 실수를 반복했다.

여전히 두려움이 있다. 우리가 운이 그냥 좋은 건 아닐까. 갑자기 시장이 주저앉으면 어떡하지. 동료들이 번아웃이 오거나 갑자기 더 좋은 팀으로 떠나버리는건 아닐지. 경쟁사들이 속속들이 생기는데 그들은 얼마나 강할지. 하루에도 몇 번씩 이런 생각을 한다.

그렇지만 한편으로 수많은 난관에도 불구하고 매년 우리는 꾸준히 전진해왔다. 지바카에서 피키로 이름도 완전히 바뀌었고, 그 과정에서 함께하는 이들도 대부분 교체되었지만, 이제는 3년을 함께한 동지들도 생겼고, 앞으로 오랫동안 함께할 동지들도 속속들이 합류하고 있다. 이들과 함께라면 어떤 어려움이든 극복할 수 있을거라고 생각한다. 이미 훨씬 더 어려운 상황에서도 매번 방법을 찾아왔으니깐.

Picky 동지들. (영어로는 어떤 표현이 좋을지 고민을 해봐야겠다) 모두들에게 더 많은 이야기를 들려주고 싶다. 그리고 지난 6.5년간 많은 도움을 주신 고객님들, 파트너 분들, 주주분들을 포함한 창업 여정을 서포트해주신 모든 분들께 더 자주, 자세하게 우리가 가는 특별한 여정에 대한 이야기를 들려드리고자 한다.

올해부터는 더 많은 분들이 Picky와 함께하고자 하는 목표를 가지고 있다. 채용도, 영업도, 파트너십도 모두 다 작년의 몇 배로 진행하고자 하며, 어쩌면 새로운 주주분들을 모시게 될지도 모르겠다.

그리고 “이지홍”의 창업가로서, 사회 혁신가(?)로서의 여정도 계속될 것이다. 다행히 딴 길로 안빠지고 호기심, 용기, 에너지를 가지고 전세계를 누비며, 운동도 꾸준히 하면서, 대한민국과 서울을 더 멋진 곳으로 만드는 일을, 전례가 없는 새로운 조직과 사업을 통하여 실현해 나가고 있다!

Until my early 30s, I consistently wrote posts. The last article I wrote was in August 2018, when I went to New York, USA, to help my family settle after establishing the company.

“Back at the Starting Line.”

It took me six and a half years to take a few steps forward from that starting line. In 2018, I was incredibly arrogant, and I assured my family that everything would be settled in just four years. Although there was a major event like COVID-19 in between, I honestly think the outcome wouldn’t have been very different. As an entrepreneur and CEO, my capabilities were incredibly lacking, and only after going through countless trial and error am I finally starting to shed the label of a novice entrepreneur and CEO.

I’ve thought about restarting my blog several times. However, until last year, I wasn’t sure if I could even reach the finish line. It felt like I was stuck in an endless loop—taking a few steps forward from the starting point only to return to square one. Four years had passed since starting my company, and I had made mistake after mistake.

I still have fear. What if we’re just lucky? What if the market suddenly crashes? What if my colleagues experience burnout or suddenly leave for better teams? What if more competitors keep emerging and they turn out to be stronger? I think about these things multiple times a day.

But on the other hand, despite all the challenges, we’ve continued to move forward steadily every year. We completely changed our name from Jivaka to Picky, and throughout that process, most of the people in the team also changed. But now, we have teammates who have been with us for three years, and more are joining who will be with us for a long time. I believe that together, we can overcome any difficulty. After all, we’ve found solutions even in much tougher situations.

Picky “comrades”. (I need to think about a proper expression to use for this in English.) I want to share more stories with all of you. I also want to tell the story of our special journey to all the customers, partners, and shareholders who have supported us over the past 6.5 years, and to everyone who has been a part of this entrepreneurial journey.

Starting this year, our goal is to have even more people join our journey at Picky. We plan to ramp up hiring, sales, and partnerships to several times the level of last year, and perhaps we’ll even bring in new investors.

And as an entrepreneur and social innovator(?), life journey of “Jihong Lee” will continue. Fortunately, I haven’t veered off course. With curiosity, courage, and energy, I am traveling around the world, staying active, and working to make South Korea and Seoul even more amazing. Through unprecedented new organizations and businesses, I am working to make that a reality!
